Funding – MLIS and MSIM Graduate Programs

All domestic applicants are encouraged to submit the FAFSA and apply for student loans. Questions about the FAFSA can be directed to the UW Financial Aid Office. Please note, the UW priority application deadline for the FAFSA is February 28th. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit the FAFSA by this date.

All applicants who submit an application by January 10th are automatically considered for a merit-based iSchool scholarship. We normally award 12-15 scholarships (for each program) a year, typically in the range of $3000-6000.

The iSchool also hires students for graduate assistantships that provide a partial tuition reimbursement. Typically, 6-10 GAs are hired each year. This hiring process occurs concurrently with the admissions process. All applicants are notified by email when these positions are posted, generally sometime in February.

Students are also able to apply for hourly student positions at the iSchool and in other UW programs/departments. Usually, students have access to these systems after registering for fall classes.

Tips and Tricks from the Admissions Counselor

General advice

If you haven’t done so already, start your Informatics application today!

Online application: http://ischool.uw.edu/informatics/prospective/application_overview

New this year: Applicants can log in, save and revise their application multiple times before submitting it.

This year the Informatics program is expanding. In previous years, we’ve planned to enroll 70 students in each cohort. This year we are planning to admit a larger class.

The Informatics admissions committee has a holistic review process. They focus a lot on your responses to the application questions, goals and understanding of the major.

Regarding classes for Autumn quarter, we generally advise that all applicants sign up for a schedule that they would pursue if not admitted to the major. We hold spaces in core first-year Informatics courses (INFO 343 and 360) for all newly admitted students, so if admitted you will be able to sign up for these before the quarter begins.

Grades and Prerequisites

Worried about your CSE 142 grade or cumulative GPA? Don’t stress—we admit student with a wide range of grades. Last year, applicants admitted to the program had CSE 142 grades ranging from 2.3 to 4.0, with an average CSE 142 grade of 3.33. The range of cumulative GPAs was 2.16 – 3.89, with an average GPA of 3.26.

Not able to take INFO 200 (or another prerequisite)? It’s OK—we still want to see your application. The admissions committee understands that applicants may not have been able to take all the prerequisite courses by the end of Spring 2011.

If you’ve taken your prerequisites at another school (not the UW), don’t worry about taking INFO 100 or 200. The admissions committee understands that transfer students are not typically able to take these prerequisite classes.

INFO 100 is an optional prerequisite; UW students should not be concerned if they haven’t taken it.

Concerned about one low grade or one tough quarter? It’s OK—the admissions committee understands that one grade and/or one term may not be indicative of an applicant’s abilities or potential in the program. Feel free to include information about extenuating circumstances that you feel may be relevant to your application (question 7 in the application).

Transcripts

If all of your collegiate level coursework has been at the UW you don’t need to submit a transcript.

If you attended a community college before attending the UW, please remember to submit an unofficial transcript from that community college. Transcripts can be emailed to iask@uw.edu.

If you are transferring to the UW from another school, remember to submit your transcripts after your Spring 2011 grades are posted. Transcripts can be emailed to iask@uw.edu. Don’t worry, if you forget, we’ll send a reminder!

If nothing else . . .

Don’t miss the deadline. The Informatics application will automatically close at midnight the day of the deadline (June 15). Applicants can submit applications all day on June 15. The admissions committee will not accept late applications.

My all-time favorite piece of admissions advice: If you don’t apply, you won’t get in.

Questions? Email iask@uw.edu

Admissions Tips and Tricks from the Admissions Counselor

As many of the UW iSchool application deadlines approach, here are tips and tricks for students applying to our graduate programs from our Admissions Counselor, Kari Brothers:

If you haven’t done so already, start your MyGrad application. There is no cost to start an application and no penalty if you choose not to apply.

Applicants who choose to submit their application within one week of the deadline will experience much longer processing times. (Last year, we received 200 applications during the 5 days before the MLIS deadline.)

If you know you are going to apply, send your transcript early – like right now. (We don’t require your Fall 2010 grades to be posted on your transcript.)

Don’t wait for your recommendations to be submitted to submit your application.

Your GRE/GMAT scores and transcripts will only “match up” with your application after the application has been submitted. The sooner you submit the application, the sooner these materials can be matched up and you can determine if anything is missing.

If you have not yet submitted your MyGrad application, we have very limited to your information and cannot review your application. Therefore, the sooner your application is submitted, the sooner we can help you if there is a problem.

Most of the questions we receive (80-90%) are answered on our website. Please review our website and the application instructions in MyGrad before contacting our office.

MLIS FAQs: http://ischool.uw.edu/mlis/faqs

MSIM FAQs: http://ischool.uw.edu/msim/prospective/common-questions

Worried about your GRE or GMAT scores? Don’t be. We admit student with a wide range of test scores. Our admissions committees (MSIM and MLIS) have a very holistic review process. They focus a lot on your personal statement and recommendations. Very rarely, if ever, is an applicant denied solely on the basis of their test scores.

If you don’t apply, you won’t get in.

Most importantly, don’t miss the deadline. The MyGrad application will automatically close at midnight the day of the deadline (January 15 for MSIM and February 1 for MLIS). The admissions committees will not accept late applications.
